CHADRON, Neb. (AP) - The Spotted Tail and Roberts Tract fires near Chadron continue to burn, but Governor Dave Heineman and U-S Senator Chuck Hagel say they're impressed with the progress so far.

The two toured fire areas today. It is Hagel's first visit to the sites, where 30,000 acres have burned. The senator says he's amazed to see just how close Chadron came to disaster before a last-ditch stand stopped the flames on the edge of the Chadron State College campus.

Hagel said the hard work, leadership, and cooperation between all levels of government in the firefighting effort was "a real model" of how things should be done.

Heineman says federal funds will cover much of the cost of battling both the Chadron and Harrison area fires. The fires are now considered contained.
