Disbursements of funds and in-kind donations of the Dawes –Sioux Fire Fund have begun.

As of August 17, the fire fund has received a total of $78,464.18, plus in-kind donations of hay, other livestock forage and fence materials.

At least 66 individuals and families in Dawes and Sioux Counties will receive allotments from the fire fund. Each of the families that lost their home, as well as the bed and breakfast near Sowbelly Canyon will receive funds for incidental needs. Volunteer fire departments in Dawes and Counties will each receive a portion of the funds.

There are 62 individual landowners that will receive a portion of the funds for fencing needs according to Don Blausey, spokesperson for the Dawes – Sioux Fire Fund. Blausey stated, “Nearly $52,000 in vouchers will be distributed to individual landowners just for temporary fence materials. Each of those individuals who were fire victims that had more than a quarter of a mile of fence lost, will receive $220 per mile of fence destroyed by the fires. As most can imagine, this is only a very small portion of the overall cost to the individual landowners”. Initial assessments determined there were approximately 235 miles of fence on private property that was destroyed by the wildfires in Dawes and Sioux Counties.

According to Blausey, the vouchers being provided to landowners for fencing materials will be redeemable at either Herron Brothers in Crawford or Harrison, The Mercantile in Chadron, or White River Feed in Chadron.

As anticipated, the losses in Sioux County are greater than in Dawes County due to having more private landowners. Blausey stated, “It appears the landowner with the largest individual loss is in Sioux County. One individual was identified as losing nearly 20 miles of fence. Four other individuals lost 10 miles of fence or more, and several had between 5 and 10 miles of fence lost”.

Hay and other in-kind donations are also being distributed.

Donations are still needed. Blausey stated, “The donations received so far are very much appreciated, especially by those who lost so much in the fires. The generosity of so many people has been amazing. However, the donations received are just a drop in the bucket for what’s needed”.

Donations of hay or fence materials can be delivered to the Crawford Livestock Market, West Beach Street, in Crawford. Donors are asked to call in advance of shipment or delivery. To call the Crawford Livestock Market, please call toll-free 866-665-2220 or (308) 665-2220.

Monetary donations can be delivered to any financial institution in Dawes or Sioux Counties, or mailed to the Dawes – Sioux Fire Fund, P.O. Box 1125, Chadron, Nebraska, 69337.
