The Dawes – Sioux Fire Fund has surpassed the $100,000 mark for cash donations, and the value of in-kind donations is estimated at $50,000.
As of Friday morning, September 8, 2006, the cash fund had received a total of $104,564.
“The overall goal of the fire fund has nearly been met”, said Don Blausey, spokesperson for the Dawes – Sioux Fire Fund. He added, “Initially, we knew we needed somewhere in the neighborhood of $200,000 for immediate relief efforts, so we’re getting close. With a couple of cash pledges still to be received, we should attain our goal”. It is anticipated that additional in-kind donations will also be received according to Blausey.
All in-kind donations delivered to the Crawford Livestock Market have been distributed to needy farmers and ranchers, and most of the monetary donations have been allocated to fire victims. Volunteer fire departments have also been allocated a portion of the funds received, as well as those individuals who suffered personal property losses such as homes or business related property.
“The response to the fire fund has been phenomenal. Words alone can’t express our gratitude to all the donors”, Blausey said. “Everyone that has donated should be proud of their contribution, no matter how big or how small it might have been. The victims and fire department personnel are so appreciative of everyone’s kindness and generosity”.
Fire relief efforts were assisted by a donation of $450,000 from the Peter Keiwit Foundation that went directly to fire departments that participated in the fire fighting efforts.
Monetary donations can still be mailed to the Dawes – Sioux Fire Fund, P.O. Box 1125, Chadron, Nebraska, 69337.
