The Reds beat the Blues 82-81 last night in the Nebraska Coaches Association all-star boys basketball game at Lincoln North Star.
The Reds trailed the Blues....coached by Chadron High's Craig Nobling and featuring former Chadron stars Eliot Eliason and Zac Bargen, Lars Backward of Hay Springs, and Sidney's Matt Rosenbaum...until the closing minutes, setting up a see-saw finish.
The momentum began to shift with about 4 minutes left when Eliason...the 2-time Nebraska Gatorade player of the year and a D-1 recruit at Minnesota...fouled out with 4 points, 13 rebounds and six blocks.
After the Reds took the lead by 1, Bargen was fouled on a 3-point attempt, but missed 2 of the 3 free throws. The Reds took the lead for good on a 12-foot jumpber by Nick Reed of Syracuse...a Doane recruit...with :38 left, but Reed missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with :20 to give the Blues one last chance to win.
They made 15 treys on the night, but misfired on their final attempt and the Reds were able to corral the rebound and run out the clock.
Missouri Western recruit Jordan Yurth of Lincoln East led the Reds with 14 points, including nine in the third quarter. Three Blue players scored in double figures -- Ewing's Austin Kaczor with 12 points and 2 of the 4 Panhandle players...Bargen and Rosenbaum....who each had 11.
In the girls All-Star game....Creighton recuits Sarah Nelson, McKenzie Fujan and Alyssa Kamphaus led the Red team to a 62-47 triumph
Nelson scored a game-high 13 while Fujan and Kamphaus combined for 10...but more importantly, the trio scored 14 of the Reds' first 21 points to open up a 13-point margin early in the second quarter.
The Blue team got as close as eight points, 30-22, early in the third quarter after NU recruit Jordan Hooper of Alliance converted a three-point play, but the Reds answered with an 8-1 run and didn't look back.
The 6-2 Hooper, a three-time Super-Stater from Alliance, finished with a double-double: 10 points and 10 rebounds...but was just 2-6 from the field for the Blues...who shot 17% as a team.
East Butler's Marissa Bongers had a Blue team-high 12 in the last game for her high school coach Gerry Reinsch, who just retired after 36 years at East Butler.
The Coaches Association All-Star Volleyball Game is tonight at 6:00 MDT, also at Lincoln North Star, also on NET1, and also on-line free at www.netNebraska.org.
Only one Panhandle player will be taking part, 6-1 middle hitter Courtney Lau of Bridgeport, who will play on the Red team..
The All-Star games wrap up tomorrow with a softball doubleheader starting at 4:00 mdt at UNL's Bowlin Field, but the games will not be televised.
There's only one Panhandle player in it, too: Chadron High infielder Brooke Grant, part of the Red team. Her mother, Chadron High head coach DeeDee Grant, is the Red team assistant to head coach Kevin Dunn of Omaha West Side.
