Nebraska 3rd District Congressman Adrian Smith is urging House and Senate committees to include sufficient money for the Essential Air Service program in the final version of the bill reauthorizing and funding the FAA.

Smith....a Republican and chairman of the Congressional Rural Caucus and a member of the Congressional General Aviation Caucus...joined Maryland Democratic Congressman Michael Michaud in a bipartisan letter to the House Transportation & Infrastructure Committee and the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science & Transportation...

The two House members say the country can't afford to eliminate the EAS program, calling it "a tool the economies of rural communities depend on," especially when those communities are still feeling the effects of the recession.

Their letter says businesses need access to convenient and dependable air service, and that dropping the EAS program would put rural businesses at a competitive disadvantage.

Smith says it's right that Congress constantly work to ensure it's spending taxpayer dollars as effectively as possible, but that "simply sun-setting the existing program instead of pursuing meaningful reforms would do considerable damage to communities throughout the country.”

The House and Senate passed different versions of the FAA reauthorization bill last year, with the House version adding new restrictions including a minimum passenger requirement that would cost Chadron and Alliance their regularly-scheduled air service.
