Ellsworth Senator LeRoy Louden's bill designed to limit the spread of black-tailed prairie dog colonies from one owners land to another received unanimous first-round approval in the legislature this morning.
LB-473 gives counties the power to carry out a management program to help control prairie dogs, which ranchers often view as pests.
Counties would notify landowners that a colony is not being managed and require them to take action.
Landowners would also have to notify counties that they have moved to address the problem.
