The 141st Nebraska State Fair opens today in its new home at Fonner Park in Grand Island. It had been in Lincoln for more than a century until moving this year to make way for the University of Nebraska to build a high-tech research park at the old fairgrounds.
A ceremony celebrating the move from will be held at 4 p.m. Friday, followed by a parade that inlcudes Governor Dave Heineman and his wife.
Fonner Park has seen construction of a number of new buildings for the State Fair...including one of the largest livestock barn complexes in the country...but UNL assistant Dean Kathleen Lodl, who oversees the Cooperative Extension Service, says all the State Fair 4-H traditions remain in place.
This year's State Fair theme is "It's a Grand Affair!" in honor of the move to Grand Island, and the State Fair Board has made a renewed emphasis on agriculture, 4-H, and FFA. Lodl says there are new activities planned specifically to get young people more involved when they're at the fair..
Grand Island and the State Fair Board have been touring the new facilities and how they will make the fair experience even better. Lodl shares their opinion and excitement.
The Nebraska State Fair runs through Labor Day. For information on 4-H events and activities scheduled for each day of the fair, go on line and visit 4H dot U-N-L dot E-D-U.
