The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says 8 human cases of West Nile virus have been confirmed in Nebraska so far this summer...the same as this time last year. Pools of mosquitoes in 14 counties have also tested positive for the virus
Two of the 8 human cases have been from the Panhandle: a Scotts Bluff County man between ages 26 and 50, and a female from Cheyenne County...also 26-to-50. Privacy laws prevent the state from releasing identities.
Chief State Medical Officer Dr Joann Schaefer says with the growing number of human cases and infected mosquito pools, the public can't afford to be complacent. She says people need to take precautions against mosquito bites because West Nile can be a very serious disease.
Among the precautions she recommends are using a repellant containing a high level of DEET, wearing long pants and long sleeves, and limiting the amount of time spent outside around dusk and dawn...the times mosquitoes are generally most active.
