MEISTER SELECTS BOYLE AS RUNNING MATE (with audio)

Scottsbluff attorney and Democratic candidate for governor Mike Meister has picked former party chairman and current Public Service Commission member Anne Boyle as his running mate.

Meister had until Wednesday to file the paperwork with the Secretary of State's office for his running mate to appear on the November ballot against Republican incumbents Dave Heineman and Rick Sheehy.

Meister was named the Democratic nominee at the party convention in late July after Mark Lakers dropped out of the race amid allegations of falsifying campaign-finance reports and calls by Boyle for party leaders to pull support for him.

Meister says Boyle...considered by many as the longtime leading lady of the state Democratic Party...is a great addition to the ticket with her long experience in the state and national party.

The new Lt Governor candidate wasted no time attacking Heineman....accusing him of abusing the power of his office in a letter sent last week to the state teachers union and the associations for school boards and school administrators.

In the letter, Heineman said if those groups didn't support repeal of the federal health care law, he will assume they support cuts to funding education. Boyle called that "bully politics"...and said "blackmail politics has no room in the office of Governor of this state or anywhere else in the country."

Meanwhile, current party chairman Vic Covalt urged the teachers to withdrawal its endorsement of Heineman because of the letter...saying the governor is using his office to "threaten education for his partisan agenda."
