LAWYERS CAN'T AGREE ON LANGUAGE IN FREMONT SUIT

       Attorneys involved in the court fight over the city of Fremont ordinance banning the hiring of or renting to illegal immigrants couldn't agree this week on the wording of a legal question being sent to the Nebraska Supreme Court, so a federal judge will decide what is included.

      U-S District Laurie Smith Camp said last month she wasn't sure if the lawsuits brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska and the Mexican American Legal Defense & Educational Fund challenging the ordinance should be heard in federal or state court, so she was asking the Supreme Court to decide.

     Smith Camp...a former Nebraska Assistant Attorney General...asked the lawyers for both sides to craft the language of the question going to the high court, but motions filed with her court yesterday said the attorneys couldn't reach an agreement in a Tuesday conference call.

     Each submitted a proposed question to Smith Camp, who can choose to accept either one or write her own. It's not clear when she will decide.
