State Senator John Harms' bill to strengthen Nebraska's MIP laws by taking away the driver's licenses of violators received second-round approval Wednesday ... but not before lawmakers rejected an attempt to broaden it.

Senator Russ Karpisek wanted to add as an amendment his bill to yank the license of teens caught with illegal drugs, arguing that it didn't make sense that teens with illegal drugs would receive a lesser penalty than those caught with alcohol.

Other lawmakers disagreed, saying his proposal was too different from Harms' minor-in-possession bill to be tacked onto it as an amendment.

The Harms bill ... as amended on first round debate ... gives judges the option of suspending the driver's licenses of people 18 and under when they were convicted of minor-in-possession of alcohol. It originally called for mandatory suspensions.
