Nebraska lawmakers have given overwhelming 40-1 first-round approval to a new funding formula for the state's 6 community college districts.
Sponsor Senator Greg Adams of York says LB-946 adjusts how state aid is divided among the colleges, a point of contention between Omaha's Metropolitan Community College and its counterparts, and makes it easier for each to predict how much state aid it will get each year.
The presidents of the colleges worked with Adams and the legislature's Education Committee to reach a formula acceptable to all.
Western Nebraska Community College Board Chairman Dr Merlyn Gramberg says it's important that all 6 schools signed onto the proposal before it went to the legislature.
The Metro board narrowly approved the funding plan on a 3-2 vote, with critics complaining that it subsidizes the smaller colleges with money from Metro, which has more students and provides larger economic benefits for the state.
Despite that and a funding fight that saw Metro sue the other 5 colleges amid accusations by both sides of the other "cooking the books," Gramberg feels confident the bill will pass and resolve the situation.
The bill must pass 2 more rounds of debate and be signed by the governor to become law.
