Cabela's says the walls are going up at its new 80,000-square foot store in Rapid City, but the company still has no target date for opening.

When the outdoor outfitting giant announced the Rapid City store last March, officials hoped to have it open this spring. A combination of factors including weather and a local election made that timetable impossible.

Earlier this winter, Cabela's was projecting a mid-summer opening...but a spokesman now says late summer is most-likely the earliest time frame. The company is already purchasing and getting donations of animals for the store's signature taxidermy displays.

Cabela's had planned to open 7 new stores this year, but the economic slump led to dropping sales at its existing stores and a scaled-back expansion of just 2 stores: Rapid City and Scarborough, Maine...just down the road from competitor LL Bean.

The Rapid City store will anchor a 700,000-square-foot open-air retail center, but the developer has yet to announce any other tenants.
