The University of Nebraska Board of Regents has unanimously agreed to allow the University of Nebraska Kearney to move forward with leaving the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference after 14 seasons.

The board Tuesday gave permission for UNK to join the MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletic Association. The MIAA has a goal of expanding from 12 to 16 members, and essentially invited UNK to become the fourth and final addition.

Kearney's formal submission of a letter of application now is expected to lead to a campus visit by MIAA ofificials before the end of the month, with a vote on accepting the Lopers by the end of next month.

UNK would likely enter the MIAA in 2012. The school says the move is driven primarily by economics and reducing travel. Chadron is the closest RMAC school to Kearney, but the MIAA has 7 schools that are that close or closer.
