The Chadron boys struggled at times and made just 8 of 18 free throws, but won their state tournament opener 41-32 over Wilber-Clatonia to advance to the C-1 semifinals tomorrow.
Wilber-Clatonia led by 6 in the first quarter 10-6, but top-ranked and 2nd-seeded Chadron closed the margin to 10-9 by the end of the period and was up 3 at the half 18-15.
After giving up the first basket after intermission, the Cardinals went on a 10-0 run that gave them a cushion for the rest of the game.
The Wolverines closed to within 5 on 3 occassions in the fourth quarter, but Chadron answered each time...thanks in large part to 7-foot University of Minnesota recruit Elliott Eliason.
Eliason scored the Cardinals final 8 points with free throws and a layup...finishing with 18 to go along with 5 blocked shots.
Fellow senior Zac Bargen added 10, while Masen Needles led Wilber-Clatonia with 14 points.
Chadron...which had the first game of the day at the Pershing Auditorium...has tomorrow's first game at the Devaney Center with tipoff at 9 am CST, 8 am MST, against Minden...which upset 3rd seeded Falls City 46-41.
