What appeared to be a down year for Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball didn't hurt the league when the NCAA announced the 64 team fields for the men's and women's Division-2 playoffs Sunday.
The RMAC landed 8 teams...4 men's and 4 women's...in the Central Regional Tournaments beginning later this week. The women play Friday-Sunday with the men going Saturday-Monday.
Grabbing the top seed and host honors for the women...despite losing in the RMAC tournament finals...was Fort Lewis College. Joining the Skyhawks in Durango from the RMAC will be Colorado Mines, Colorado State University-Pueblo...which won the league's automatic berth as the conference tournament champ...and Adams State.
The women's regional also features 4 teams from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, with 2 first round games featuring matchups between the two leagues and 2 with intra-conference rematches.
The first round games Friday will pit Fort Lewis against Mines, Pueblo versus Northern Sun conference tournament winner and 2nd seed Wayne State, and Adams State taking on Concordia-St Paul. The all-NSIC game as #4 Augustana against #5 Minnesota-Duluth.
The men's Central Regionals...which will be at Minnesota State-Mankato...also has 4 teams each from the RMAC and NSIC, but with all the opening round games featuring one team from each
RMAC regular season champ Mesa State, upset in the league tournament semifinals is the #2 seed, with tourney winner Metro State the #5 seed. New Mexico Highlands has the 6th spot and Colorado Mines is #8.
Mankato will open with Mines...making its first-ever appearance in the regionals...Mesa State will take on Winona State, New Mexico Highlands...also making its first trip to the regionals...is up against Augustana, and Metro State faces with St Cloud State in a matchup of conference tournament winners.
Each men's and women's regional champion will advance to their respective Elite Eight tournament later this month. The women play the 23rd-26th in St. Joseph, Mo, while the men's is the 24-27th at the MassMutual Center in Springfield, Mass. The complete brackets for both tournaments are at www.ncaa.com
