Chadron State College sophomores Cody Hunt and Lanar Newman left today with their coaches for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M..
Hunt, a transfer from Northern State, has broken the CSC record in the shotput 3 times this season and heads into the national meet ranked 5th at 58-6 with the toss that won the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference indoor title. The shot put is scheduled for 2 pm Friday.
Newman is competing in both the long jump and the heptathlon. The native of Jamaica stands 5th in the long jump at 23-3-3/4...the 3rd-best indoor mark in CSC history...and is 13th in the heptathlon after competing in the 7-discipline event just once, at the RMAC championships
His heptathlon score of 4,824 points was a CSC record, part of a busy conference meet that saw Newman grab a 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 7th for 28 points and a share of the Outstanding Male Athlete award as the Eagle men finished 2nd in the team standings...their best-placing ever at the RMAC meet.
Both the long jump and the first 4 events of the heptathlon will be held Friday, with the final 3 events in the heptathlon coming up Saturday morning.
