The Nebraska Department of Roads says the eastbound Interstate 80 rest area near Sidney reopened Friday after having been vandalized the night before. The individuals responsible were caught and have already paid restitution.
The rest area had received almost $400,000 in renovations and repairs a little over a year ago and was vandalized once during that work.
Thursday's vandalism included removing the doors to the stalls as well as having toilet paper dispensers removed and damaged.
Roads Department spokesman Mary Jo Oie says while vandalism to rest areas and other highway facilities is not frequent, it is costly when it does occur...not only because of needed repairs and materials, but also for the inconvenience to the traveling public.
Oie says motorists observing vandalism to rest areas, highway signs or equipment should report the vandalism immediately to the Nebraska State Patrol at1-800-525-5555, or *55 (Star 55) on their cell phone.
