An extension dryland crop specialist at the University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center at Scottsbluff has been named to the first established professorship at an off-campus location in UNL's Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Dr. Drew Lyon is the first Fenster Professor of Dryland Agriculture...a position named for Charlie Fenster of Gering, professor emeritus at the Panhandle Center. Fenster spent several decades conducting research and extension activities into dryland crops in western Nebraska.
Lyon has been Panhandle Center's dryland cropping systems specialist since 1990, and was recommended for the Fenster Professorship by a nominating committee.
The 2001 Man of the Year for the Nebraska Wheat Growers, Lyon was cited for both research and education on a variety of dryland crop issues as well as work as a champion of hard white wheat.
He's published 50 refereed journal articles, 63 Extension publications, five book chapters, one refereed proceedings paper, and numerous web pages for wheat production.
The Fenster Professorship...supported by the Charles R. and Eunice R. Fenster Professorship Fund...is intended to perpetuate scientific progress by supporting research and Extension programs to enhance the profitability and sustainability of dryland agriculture in the Panhandle.
