The threat of West Nile Virus appears to be growing in Scotts Bluff County. County Health Department Director Bill Wineman says 5 of the 6 locations where the county checks mosquitoes for the presence of the virus tested positive two weeks ago.

Wineman says the total number of mosquitoes in the county is down, but the percentage of them with the West Nile Virus is growing heading into the peak season for the Culex mosquito...the species that carries the virus.

Wineman urges the public to take precautions against being bitten, calling it the best and easiest way to prevent being infected.

The precautions he recommends include using an effective repellant, avoid being out around dawn or dusk when mosquitoes are most active, and wearing long pants, long sleeves and socks if going out at those times.
