There's plenty to do in the Panhandle this Labor Day weekend with activities in all parts of the Region.
In the south, it's the 79th annual Potter Days. There are exhibits, inflatable games, and a melodrama today, while tomorrow has the annual parade at 10:00, followed by a band concert, BBQ, street dance, and more.
Also in the southern Panhandle its the annual Chimney Rock Pioneer Days running through Sunday. On the schedule today is a pork BBQ meal and dance.
Tomorrow has the parade at 11:00, followed by food, entertainment and more. Sunday offers a trap shoot at 1:00 and a religous service at 2:00 at the high school.
Working together in the northern Panhandle are 24th annual Crawford Rock Swap in City Park and the 4th annual Knap-In and Primitive Skills Workshop at the Hudson-Meng Bison Site about 20 miles northwest of Crawford
Rockhounds and collectors from across the country come to Crawford each year for the Rock Swap...the largest event of its kind in Nebraska. Show chairman Wade Beins says dealers came in last year from 12 different states.
The public is welcome to attend and admission is free. Highlights of the four day event include free daily field trips for the public, displays and demonstrations.
There's also the 12th Annual Fairburn Agate Collectors meeting Saturday at 2:00, and a Rock Swap Supper and Auction at the Crawford Community Building Saturday evening at 6:00.
The Knap-In and Primitive Skills Workshop runs 9-4:30 pm through Labor Day at Hudson-Meng and marks the end of the tourist season there.
Site manager Leigh Anne LeGarry says the Knap-In will offer demonstrations of traditional and “primitive” skills such as hunting techniques, flint knapping, brain tanning, wild edibles, and other related topics.
There will also be hands-on activities for all ages offered every day.
Although the Hudson-Meng visitor center will close to the general public after the weekend, it will still be hosting pre-arranged visits by school groups for several weeks. For more information, call the site at 665-3900.
