INJURIES CLAIM CSC FOOTBALL PLAYER IN ALABAMA

   A Chadron State College football player from western Nebraska has died in Alabama of injuries suffered in a car accident early Monday morning that injured 2 of his teammates.

     19-year old Garrett Schlichtemeier of Ogallala died Monday at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, about 8 hours after the one-vehicle accident in nearby Auburn.

      Auburn police have not yet released the names of the 2 other players...both 18-year old redshirt freshmen from California...and the college has declined to do so until getting clearance from the authorities.

     One of the other players was described in news reports from Alabama as having received only minor injuries that were treated at the scene. The other, the driver, was also taken to the Opelika hospital...where he was reported to have had surgery yesterday.

     Chadron State Athletic Director Brad Smith says Schlitemeier and the others were spending spring break in Alabama with a fourth teammate from the Auburn-Opelika area.

    Garrett Schlichtemeier, who redshirted at wide receiver last fall, was an All-State selection at defensive back by the Omaha World-Herald after intercepting a state-high 10 passes as a senior at Ogallala High School, and played last summer in both the Shrine Bowl and West Nebraska All-Star Football game.

      His father is former Ogallala head football coach Jeff Schlichtemeier, and his grandfather Gary Schlichtemeier was the long-time Nebraska Game and Parks district wildlife manager in Alliance until his retirement two years ago.
