The Chadron State College men and women both finished 4th at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Track and Field Championships at Gunnison, Colo.
The men scored 113-1/2 points and the women 101. It's the third straight year both have topped the century mark, and it's the highest total ever for the men. CSC posted as least 24 season bests at the meet, 12 each day.
The CSC men had 3 RMAC champions...Brandon Harrington in the 110 HH, Gary Metcalf in the 200 where teammate Mike Smith was 2nd, and the 400 relay, which include those 3 plus Jake Gruver.
Harrington also provided one of three seconds...going a career-best 49-2-1/2 in the triple jump. The other 2nd came from Joe Schultz in the 5,000 meters.
The Lady Eagles had no champions, but 4 runners-up...Stacy Girard in the 1500, Mary Wells in the shot put, Kelli Payne in the pole vault and the women's 1600-meter relay team made up of Sarah Pilakowski, Whitney Hollaway, Laurie Eklund and Perisha Hinton.
In addition, several Eagles solidified their chances of qualifying for the NCAA Division II National Meet that will be May 22-24 at Walnut, Calif.
CSC Coach John Reiners said eight Eagles—six men and two women—appear to have marks that will put them on the national entry list.
“We had a good meet,” said Reiners. “A few of the kids were disappointed that they didn’t place higher, but in a lot of instances they had their best marks of the season. It’s just that the competition is so tough in this conference in many of the events.”
Highlights for the Eagles included:
First place in the men’s 400-meter relay with a time of 40.98, just .05 of a second off the school record. The team members were Gary Metcalf, Jake Gruver, Brandon Harrington and Mike Smith.
Harrington’s victory in the 110 high hurdles. He also was second in the triple jump by going 49-2 1/2, which is 14 inches farther than his previous personal best and a mark that should qualify him for nationals. Another CSC entry, John Ritzen, was sixth in the triple jump at 46-11 ½, his career best by 13 inches.
First and second in the 200 by Metcalf and Smith, respectively, with times of 21.62 and 21.65. Metcalf also was second in the 100 with a career-best 10.77. The 100 had to be re-run after the automatic timing device failed during the race for the second year in a row.
Reiners said Smith won the first race with a hand-held time of 10.11. But because qualifying for nationals requires electronic timing, the race was run again at the end of the meet.
By then Smith had a tight hamstring and he walked the 100 meters to claim eighth place. The latter, Reiners said, was about the Eagles’ only disappointment at the conference meet.
A time of 3:57.94 in the 1500 by Joe Schultz to automatically qualify him for nationals. He also was second in the 5000.
Mike Aimone’s 55-foot shot put that placed third and is expected to send him to nationals.
Pilakowski’s school-record of 58.02 in the 400 meters. Her career-best in the event prior to the conference meet was 1:01.65.
Second place finishes by Stacy Girard in the 1500, Mary Wells in the shot put, Kelli Payne in the pole vault and the women’s 1600-meter relay team made up of Pilakowski, Whitney Hollaway, Laurie Eklund and Perisha Hinton.
Reiners said the marks by Girard in the 1500 (4:47.59) and Wells in the discus (146-5) should have nailed down their invitations to the national meet. Wells placed in all four of the throws at the RMAC meet.
