The city of Crawford is exploring the possibility of closing its police department and contracting with the Dawes County Sheriff for law enforcement services.

Mayor L-J Moloney and Police Chief Craig Taylor met with the Board of County Commissioners and Sheriff Karl Dailey about the idea Wednesday, but Board Chairman Don Blausey says it became evident early on that there were still a lot of facts and figures that were needed.

As a result, the commissioners took no action on the proposal.

The idea was brought to the Crawford city council by a group of Crawford residents after a local teenager was shot to death by then-Police Chief Rick Thompson during an apparent burglary.
