The Crawford Old West Trails Rodeo and 4th of July Celebration ends Saturday, but it will be a full day events.
Up first is a 5-K run. Registration begins at 7:00 at the Fort Robinson Post Playhouse, with the runners leaving at 7:30.
The 4th of July Parade begins at 10:00, but before it does...the Galloping Grannies will perform at 9:00 downtown in front of the new Security First Bank.
This year's parade theme is “Land of the Cowboys and Indians,” and the Grand Marshals are all descendants of local cowboys and indians.
They are: Lena and Vincent Ten Fingers, Angie Taylor, Bob White, Renie Ferren, Wilbur Rising, Melvin Nation, and Margy Holmgren.
Also taking part in the parade will the U-S Forest Service Rocky Mountain Regional Specialty pack string, mules used by the agency to manage and maintain wilderness and back-country areas were vehicles are banned.
The pack string is usually based in Morrison, but is working in the nearby Black Hills and will come to Crawford for the day.
Pine Ridge District Ranger Charlie Marsh says the pack string also serves as ambassadors for the Forest Service, a unique way for the agency to educate the public about minimal impact recreational principals and techniques.
After the parade, there's entertainment from noon till 5 in the Crawford City Park. The first hour has scenes and numbers by the Fort Robinson Post Playhouse cast, then its the White River Band until 5:00.
Fort Robinson holds its annual 4th of July Picnic, and the Post Playhouse has a special matinee performance of Hello, Dolly at 2:00...replacing the regular evening show.
The 36th annual Western and Wildlife Art Show...featuring 26 artists...will wrap up its 4 day run Saturday in the old Fort Robinson vet stables.
The final PRCA rodeo performance starts at 8:00. Presiding over it are this year's Old West Trails Rodeo Queen Gina Jesperson of Hemingford and Rodeo Princess Olivia Hunsperger of Crawford.
Capping the day...and the week...will the be the traditional post-rodeo fireworks show at the rodeo grounds.
