CHADRON SB TO TALK GRADE SCHOOL CLASSES AGAIN

    The Chadron School Board could be looking at another big crowd when it meets tonight (Monday) at 5:30 in the district offices. The agenda includes more discussion of 2 controversial items discussed at last month's board meeting.

      One proposal would change the class make up of the Chadron district's two in-town grade schools, while the other would sharply reducing the ability of elementary students to transfer to its 4 rural attendance areas.

     The elementary school class proposal put all the in-town kindergarten, 1st grade, and 2nd grade classes at East Ward elementary and all the 3rd and 4th grade classes at Kenwood.

     Superintendent Dr Sherlock Hirning says Chadron is one of the last districts in the Panhandle not using that system. He says it would allow the district to utilize staff and other resources more efficiently while allowing greater interaction between all the teachers for a specific grade ... all with the goal of improved education.

       The proposed transfer policy would end the current practice of automatically allowing any student in the district to go from their attendance area to one of the other grade schools as long as space was available. About half the students at the 4 rural schools are transfers from the in-town schools.     

     A related issue ... whether the attendance area boundaries need to be redrawn to reflect space availability at Kenwood and East Ward ... will also be discussed tonight.
