Authorities in Opelika and Auburn, Alabama, have released more information about the traffic accident early Monday morning that claimed the life of a Chadron State College football player from western Nebraska and injured 2 of his teammates.
Lee County Coroner Bill Harris says 19-year old Garrett Schlichtemeir of Ogallala suffered a "severe closed head injury" in the 2:30 am accident in Auburn, and was pronounced brain dead about 8 hours later at the East Alabama Medical Center in nearby Opelika.
Harris also identified the others in the vehicle as 18-year old Michael Madkins of Elk Grove, California...who was the driver...and 18-year old Tyler Perri of Covina, California. All three players were freshmen at Chadron State.
Perri received only minor injuries and was treated at the scene, but Madkins was taken to the Opelika hospital along with Schlictemeier in critical condition.
Madkins was still a patient at mid-afternoon Tuesday, but his family declined to allow hospital officials to release any information under federal privacy laws.
Chadron State Athletic Director Brad Smith says the trio were spending spring break in Alabama with a fourth teammate...19-year old Logan Rodgers, who lives not far from the Auburn-Opelika area in Spanish Fort, Alabama.
A release from coroner Harris says Madkins was driving a Range Rover on the Shug Jordan Parkway...named for the legendary Auburn University football coach...when he lost control and it rolled several times...ejecting Schlichtemeier, Madkins, and Perri.
The accident remains under investigation by the Auburn Police, Lee County Coroner's Office, and the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences. Harris says alcohol is suspected to have been a factor, and that an autopsy was planned by a ADFS medical examiner in the capital of Montgomery.
Garrett Schlichtemeier, who redshirted at wide receiver last fall, was an All-State selection at defensive back by the Omaha World-Herald after intercepting a state-high 10 passes as a senior at Ogallala High School, and played last summer in both the Shrine Bowl and West Nebraska All-Star Football game.
His father is former Ogallala head football coach Jeff Schlichtemeier, and his grandfather Gary Schlichtemeier was the long-time Nebraska Game and Parks district wildlife manager in Alliance until his retirement 2 years ago.
A spokesman for the East Alabama Medical Center says the Schlichtemeier family asked that Garrett's organs be donated for transplants.
Madkins, Perri, and Rogers were also freshmen who redshirted last fall. Rodgers is a quarterback, Madkins a running back, and Perri a defensive end.
