The Chadron School Board has picked 3 finalists to interview be the district's next superintendent, and one is a former Panhandle educator.

Randy Butcher...the former superintendent in Bridgeport and now a special education administrator for the Goshen County schools in Torrington...is joined on the finalists list by Loup City Superintendent and elementary principal Dr Caroline Winchester and Renwick, Kansas, Superintendent Dr Dan Peters.

The Nebraska Association of School Boards...which ran the application and screening process for the Chadron district...originally received 16 applications for the position.

Director of Superintendent Searches Marcia Herring says 2 candidates  withdrew after being hired for other positions and a third dropped out when his board gave him a sizable pay raise after learning of his interest in the Chadron job.

Each of the 3 finalists will be interviewed by the school board in public sessions next week. Winchester...who's also been the Superintendent in Elba and the Elba-Wolbach combined district...will be in first on Monday.

Up next on Tuesday will be Butcher...whose background includes a stint as administrator of ESU 17 in Ainsworth....followed on Wednesday by Peters...who is in his first job as a superintendent.

Each will have a 90-minute session running from 5-6:30 pm. The meetings are planned for the Chadron district offices, but could move to another location if the audience proves too large.

The 3 finalists will also be interviewed by what  Herring calls 4 stakeholders groups...teachers, administrators, classified staff, and community members.

She says the idea is to give the school board input from a wide range of interests who have relationships with the school district and would be affected by the new superintendent, while also telling those stakeholders that their opinions are important to the board.

Herring met yesterday afternoon with the stakeholders selected to do the interviews...giving them some overall guidance on the interview process, but generally letting each group hash out its own procedures and candidate questions

Each group will complete a one-page summary of each interview that will be sealed and not reviewed by the board members until after they complete their own interview. Herring says the process gives the board input without affecting their attitudes in advance.

The school board...which reviewed all 13 applications over several hours last night before settling on Peters, Winchester, and Butcher...will meet in special session next Friday to review the interviews and hopefully settle on its choice. The members hope to finalize a contract by early the following week.

Current Superintendent Dr Sherlock Hirning is stepping down in June after 6 years, citing a poor working relationship with the school board.
