Three Chadron State College football players were injured...two of them seriously...about 2:30 Monday morning in a 1-vehicle crash in Auburn, Alabama.
Neither the Alabama authorities or the college have released the names yet, but CSC Athletic Director Brad Smith confirms the trio are players who were spending spring break with another teammate who lives in Alabama.
Family friends say one of the three was 19-year old Garrett Schlichtemeier of Ogallala, Nebraska, and they describe him as on life support in critical condition.
WTVM-TV in Opelika, Alabama, says the Auburn Police Department is still investigating the accident and identifying those involved only as a 19-year from Ogallala...which would apparently be Schlichtemeier...and two 18-year olds from California.
The 19-year old and the 18-year old driver from Sacramento were both taken to the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika. Their conditions are not yet known, but the driver was reported have undergone surgery.
The third passenger...listed as from Covina, California...was said to have been treated for minor injuries at the scene and did not need further care.
Schlichtemeier redshirted last fall and is completing his freshman year at Chadron State. His father is former Ogallala head football coach Jeff Schlichtemeier and his grandfather Gary Schlichtemeier was the long-time Nebraska Game and Parks district wildlife manager in Alliance until his retirement 2 years ago.
