        One rural Dawes County Road is closed for at least the weekend and one is closed to trucks, both the result of heavy rain Thursday night.

       Dawes County Roads Superintendent Harvey Keim says East River Road is closed between Hollibaugh Road and Squaw Mound Road east of Marland, while Squaw Mound is closed to trucks East Belmont Road and No Name Road.

      To detour around the East River Road closure, take Squaw Mound Road to No Name Road, then No Name Road to Hollibaugh Road.

       Keim says nearly all the county roads in the southern part of Dawes County suffered some level of damage in the heavy rain, so drivers need to use extreme caution even on roads that remain open.

       Keim doesn't know when East River Road will reopen, or when damage to other roads will be fixed because of the  extremely wet conditions.

   The National Weather Service estimates that 3 to 3-1/2 inches of rain fell in an area between Marsland and the Box Butte Reservoir Thursday night.

Other rainfall amounts include:

2.5 inches -- 22 miles northeast of Alliance;

1.1 inches --- Double Q Country in Alliance

1.9 inches --- Near the Box Butte County Fairgrounds in Hemingford

.77 -- Alliance Airport

Main Street in Crawford was closed briefly by deep water beneath the railroad underpass.
