The success of Chadron High School's early Friday release in providing more time for teacher preparation and development has the district's elementary and middle school teachers asking for shorter Friday's too, but the school board's concerned about the impact.

The board discussed the issue with teachers and administrators for about half an hour last night before deciding get more input from patrons. Board President Charlie Kuskie says the teachers made a strong case, but not strong enough for an immediate decision.

The biggest concern was raised by board member Tracy Nobling, a Chadron State College faculty member and mother of two elementary students.

She said extending the high school 1:30 pm release time to the grade school would cause transportation and child care problems for her, and probably even greater problems for many other parents. Charlie Kuskie says it's a serious concern.

Some of the ideas the school board is looking at are going to an early elementary release once a month, providing a full in-service day once a month with no classes for students, and seeing if the C-PRIDE after-school program and the Boys and Girls Club might be able to extend their work to cover the extra time in the future.
