The waiting is almost over for CSC star Danny Woodhead. College football's alltime leading rusher and the 2-time winner of the Harlon High Award as the best player in NCAA D-2 hopes to be selected Sunday during the second day of the NFL draft, and he'll have a lot people watching as he waits.
ESPN is sending a satellite truck to Woodhead's North Platte home, and the sports network is expected to interview him from its draft-day headquarters.
His agent...Chris Gittings...says Woodhead is one of several potential second day "sleepers" ESPN will be tracking, thinking he has a good chance to be drafted. Gittings doesn't know how long the network will cover him...saying it could be any where from 5 seconds to 5 hours.
Woodhead warns viewers not to expect anything too exciting. He says he probably won't even watch the draft all the time, expecting to "kick back", hang out with his family, watch some NBA playoff action, and generall just enjoy himself.
Gittings had been saying Woodhead didn't seem to be getting much attention from NFL personnel people, but now says that seems to be changing...thanks to the numbers he posted at his workout day at UNL. .
Woodhead turned in between a 4.33 and a 4.38 40-yard time with a 38½-inch vertical jump and a pro-agility time of 4.03 seconds...all better than almost all the other running backs who been tested this year.
Even with those numbers and the excited they generated, Gittings says most of the NFL people still say Woodhead's a "bubble guy" because of his size...even though he's about the same size as some D-1 prospects.
Gitting won't be surprised if Woodhead is or isn't drafted, and sees positives from either outcome. If he is drafted, he'll get a bigger signing bonus and a bit more consideration when cut time comes. If he's not drafted, he'll be able to pick among all the teams as a free agent and not be limited to just one.
Woodhead, who is getting married in July, says he's not "stressed out"...just eager to get the weekend done and know where he's going. He says it's "no big deal" if he doesn't get drafted because he knows he'll sign somewhere.
He's also not worried about having tv cameras on him and not being drafted...saying it will just give viewers that much more of a chance to get know more about him.
