Former Black Hills State head coach Russ Martin...a Scottsbluff native, Chadron State graduate, and father of Eagles assistant Ben Martin...is the new head coach at Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction, and he's taking longtime CSC defensive coordinator Todd Auer with him.

Martin succeeds Joe Ramunno, fired at the end of the season after 14 years at the helm of the Mavericks. Ramunno was 4-7 this season and 80-77 overall.

Martin has spent the past eight seasons as the offensive coordinator for Nebraska-Kearney, averaging 33 points and 410 yards per game. The Lopers were even better this year, ranking 2nd in D-II in total offense (519 yards per game), 4th in rushing (281 ypg) and 10th in scoring (39.5 ppg).

Mesa Athletic Director Butch Miller says the school is "tremendously excited and pleased" to get Martin, calling his accomplishments numerous. Miller also says Martin's character and leadership will be advantageous for the student-athletes, the University and the community.

The 56-year old Martin has 26 years of coaching experience on his resume, with stops as an assistant at Baylor, Southeast Missouri, Kansas Wesleyan, and Bethany College in Kansas as well as his stint from 1996-99 at Black Hills State...where he was 12-27.

Before his college coaching career, Martin was the head coach at Minatare from 1979-81 and an assistant at Scottsbluff High from 1982-85. He was a 4-year letterwinner at linebacker for Chadron State, earning all-conference honors as a junior and senior.

While AD Miller confirms that the 46-year old Auer is going to Grand Junction, he won't officially say it's as defensive coordinator...only that Martin and an assistant will be introduced along with Martin's family on Tuesday.

Auer has spent the past 22 years at Chadron State, coming as Bill O'Boyle's replacement as offensive line coach when O'Boyle went to Western Illinois, then taking over as defensive coordinator 17 seasons ago when Scott Noble left for Fort Hayes and O'Boyle returned to the Eagles.

Auer...who'd been a player at Western Illinois when O'Boyle was a student assistant...remained defensive coordinator when O'Boyle moved up to head coach in 2005.

His defenses have led the RMAC in total defense 11 times, rushing defense 10 times, scoring defense 9 times, and passing defense 5 times.

CSC announced just before Christmas that O'Boyle's contract would not be extended when it expires in June, citing the NCAA investigation into self-reported possible violations of fundraising rules by the football program.
