CHADRON – The younger members of the Chadron State College football team may have distinguished themselves during a scrimmage Tuesday afternoon.

The scrimmage, which was the last one for the Eagles before their mock game Saturday morning at Elliott Field, featured 82 plays. Starters played about two series worth of plays before the alternates took over.

Only two touchdowns were scored and both came from Wyoming freshmen. Glen Clinton, a redshirt freshman from Cody, scored a touchdown after a 55-yard run, and Pierre Etchemendy, a true freshman from Douglas, returned an interception for a touchdown late in the scrimmage.

While head coach Bill O’Boyle saw plenty of positives from his younger players to make the future seem bright, he was hoping to see the offense assert itself during the scrimmage.

“I was disappointed in the offense,” he said. “I thought we were soft and that’s a big concern for me. We haven’t been really physical yet and at this point in camp we need to bring it. We need to develop some attitude pretty quickly.”

The offense struggled at times, but O’Boyle said that was largely due to the stellar play of CSC’s defensive unit.

“The defense did a great job,” he said. “I thought they flew around the field and really showed their speed off. This might be the fastest defense I’ve seen since I’ve been here. The team speed is really prevalent and because of that they created a lot of problems for us. (Defensive Coordinator) Todd Auer and his staff do an excellent job.”

The biggest play of the 82-play scrimmage belonged to Clinton, who joined the Eagles last season as a defensive back before he moved to wide receiver in the spring. However, for the last five days, he has been practicing at tailback and O’Boyle is pleased with his progression.

“He’s a very versatile athlete and he does a lot of things well,” he said. “He’s going to help us out as both a receiver and tailback.”

After Tuesday’s scrimmage, O’Boyle said the Eagles will turn all their attention to preparing for the University of Mary. Both teams open the season Saturday, Aug. 28 at Elliott Field. Kickoff is set for noon.
