West shuts out East at Cactus Bowl

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Chadron State’s Brandon Harrington and Isaac Stockton were both on the winning side of the Valero Cactus Bowl as the West shut out the East, 16-0 during the 16th annual Division II all-star game on Friday.

Harrington, a senior from Grand Island, Neb., had two catches for 18 yards, including a long reception of 15 yards.

Stockton, a senior from Colorado Springs, Colo., didn’t record any stats but played on offense and special teams.

Near the end of the first quarter, West quarterback Billy Garza (Texas A&M-Kingsville) directed the offense into the red zone thanks to his own 12-yard run and a 26-yard pass play to Daniel Nichols.  Facing a third-and-3 at the 10-yard line, Garza connected with Jerome Hewitt (Southeastern Oklahoma) for a touchdown on the first play of the second quarter.

Garza, who was named the Offensive MVP, led the West on two more scoring drives in the second quarter to seal the win.

Sam Scott, who was named the Defensive Player of the Game after tying a Cactus Bowl record with 14 tackles, led the East defense.  He also had two forced fumbles and one tackle for loss.

The Jim Langer Offensive Lineman of the Game Award was handed out to J’Marcus Webb (West Texas A&M).
