Former Chadron State College football great and NFL standout Don Beebe will spearhead the search committee to select the school's next head football coach.
Chadron State announced last week that Bill O'Boyle's contract as coach would not be renewed when it ends next June. O'Boyle has essentially been on suspension since October, when the school self-reported possible NCAA violations over football fundraising.
Athletic Director Brad Smith will chair the committee, whose other members have not been announced. They will come from the campus and community have not been not yet been announced. Smith says it's time to move forward and plan for the future of the football program, to assure that it remains strong.
CSC President Dr Janie Park says she's confident Beebe and the other committee members will conduct a successful search and find an outstanding coach who is a good fit for Chadron State.
Park calls Beebe....who has a speed-training company and is head football coach at a high school in Illinois....a "person of high moral character" who is a leader and role model for CSC's student-athletes.
Smith, Beebe's head coach for his one season at Chadron State 23 years ago, agrees. Smith says he can't think of anyone better than Beebe to lead the search because he knows football and knows and loves Chadron State.
Beebe....who chaired the fundraising effort that expanded and upgrade Elliot Field and Don Beebe Stadium....is enthusiastic about his upcoming role in the search, calling it an honor to be asked to serve his alma mater in such an important role.
Beebe says he loves Eagle football and looks forward to being a part of the search to find the coach that will carry on the legacy and history of what he calls a great program.
The relationship between Beebe and Smith predates their days at Chadron State.
Smith was an assistant at NCAA 1-AA Western Illinois in 1983 when Beebe attended briefly right out of high school, then began recruiting him shortly after taking the Chadron State job in 1987
In his one season with the Eagles in 1988, Beebe set school records for most touchdown catches in a game and a season, most overall touchdowns in a game and a season, most points scored in a game and a season, and most all-purpose yards in a season.
Beebe also set a school track record in the 55-meter dash indoors and was named the Omaha World-Herald’s “State College Athlete of the Year” in 1989.
He taken in the 3rd round of the 1989 NFL draft by the Buffalo Bills, their first pick of the draft, and went on to play 9 seasons as a wide receiver and kick returner for the Bills, Carolina Panthers and Green Bay Packers.
Beebe made 6 trips to the Super Bowl...4 with Buffalo and 2 with the Packers...earning a championship ring with Green Bbay in 1997.
He became a legendary figure when, as Buffalo was being blown out in Super Bowl XXVII, he chased down Dallas DT Leon Lett and stripped him of the ball just shy of the goal line as Lett began a premature celebration.
Beebe was highly respected by players and coaches because of his strong work ethic and character, leading to his recognition as an "Unsung Hero" at the 1996 NFL Players Association Awards Banquet.
His strong support of CSC football began immediately after he left, and included the donation of all proceeds from his well-received 1998 biography “More than a Ring” to the CSC athletic program.
Although he left college without graduating, Beebe returned after his NFL career and earned a bachelor's degree, and was also inducted into the CSC Athletic Hall of Fame.
Beebe is now the head football coach at Aurora Christian High School in Illinois, and led his team to the state title this fall after finishing 2nd last year.
