Chadron State's Danny Woodhead....college football's alltime leading rusher...was passed over in the NFL draft, but the 2-time Division-2 player of the year was quickly snapped up afterwards by the New York Jets. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
ESPN had a live satellite feed at Woodhead's North Platte home during its day-2 coverage Sunday, and the network reported as it closed its draft coverage that he was on the phone with the team.
That led the Jets fans in the famed Radio City Music Hall...which hosted the draft...to begin chanting "Danny Woodhead! Danny Woodhead!"
Agent Chris Gittings says he and Woodhead felt the Jets would be a good fit. Woodhead told ESPN earlier in the day that he wasn't worried about what it would mean if he wasn't drafted.
ESPN's team of analysts spoke highly of Woodhead's abilities and his chances of making the NFL either as a late draft pick or free agent. Chris Mortensen said the interview with Woodhead left him as impressed with the former Eagle as a young man as he was with him as a player.
The NFL teams were generally said to be hesitant about drafting Woodhead because of his 5-7-1/2" size and lack of major college competition, even though he did gain an all-division 7,962 yards in his 4 seasons at Chadron State.
Another player CSC fans saw first-hand each of the last 2 years....running back Xavier Omon of Northwest Missouri...was drafted. Omon...a high school star at Beatrice...was taken by Buffalo in the 6th round with pick #179.
Three Nebraska Cornhuskers were drafted. Cornerback Zack Bowman...who rebounded from a pair of serious knee injuries to play in 11 games last fall...went to Chicago in the 5th round at #142.
24 picks later...still in the 5th round...offensive tackle Carl Nicks was selected by the New Orleans Saints. Nicks also started 11 games for the Huskers last season.
The other Husker taken in the draft was linebacker Bo Ruud, who went #197 in the 6th round to the New England Patriots. His older brother Barrett...another former Husker...is a linebacker with Tampa Bay.
