Chadron State College center Sean McGowan has been named a Capital One Division II First-team Academic All-American. The team was selected by the members of COSIDA...the College Sports Information Directors of America.

McGowan, a senior from Lakewood, Colo., was a two-time Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference 2nd -team selection and 2-time RMAC All-Academic 1st-teamer carrying a 3.90 GPA in biology.

A 3-year starter who postponed medical school admission to play his final year, McGowan started 33 consecutive games, including 2 this season at left tackle...a position he'd never played before.

McGowan is the 14th Chadron State football player to earn Academic All-American laurels in the past 40 years.

The others are Larry Ruzicka, 1971 and ‘72; Randy Bauer, 1973; Jerry Sutton, 1973; Bob Lacey, 1975; Jerry Carder, 1979; Jay Rhoades, 1991; Corey Campbell, 1994 and ‘95; Casey Beran, 1999; Rob Evans, 2003; Danny Woodhead, 2006 and ’07; Shaine Odell, 2008; Aaron Ide, 2008; and Cory Beran, 2010.

The RMAC was well represented on the Academic All-America Team with 5 first-teamers, including  Colorado School of Mines quarterback Clay Garcia...the Academic All-American of the Year.

The other RMAC first-team selections are Colorado Mesa defensive lineman Trent deBraga, Colorado State University-Pueblo linebacker Lee Meisner and Fort Lewis punter Frank Atherton.
