CHADRON – Eight football players enrolled at Chadron State College at the start of the spring semester and are now taking part in the Eagles’ offseason program.

They are Anthony Clayton, Euedell Clayton, Daniel Vasquez, Jeremy Sondrup, Tau Ho Ching, David Slover, Zach Boness, and Brian Williams. The Claytons are not related.

Four of the transfers are receivers, two are offensive linemen and two are defensive linemen. Boness is the only one coming from a 4-year school.

“I’m very happy with the talent level of these guys coming in,” CSC head coach Bill O’Boyle said. “They are all going to have a chance to make an impact.”

The transfers add experience and depth to three positions the Eagles had to fill. Following the 2009 season, Chadron State lost its top four receivers, two starting offensive linemen and two starting defensive linemen.

O’Boyle said having the transfers join the team during the spring semester is another bonus.

“It’s really important they’re here,” he said. “It’s vital to be a member of the team in the spring and to learn our system because fall camp isn’t very long.”

Sondrup, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound inside receiver, was off to a stellar start at Snow Junior College in Utah last season before suffering a lisfranc fracture in his foot. Through three games, he had 13 receptions for 276 yards and three touchdowns.

Ho Ching, a 6-1, 255-pound defensive lineman, also played at Snow Junior College. He recorded eight tackles, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hurries and forced a fumble.

Williams and Euedell Clayton were also teammates, combining for 53 receptions at Glendale Community College in California last season. Clayton led the team with 27 receptions for 336 yards and four touchdowns, while Williams had 26 receptions for 384 yards and five touchdowns.

Anthony Clayton and Vasquez are both offensive linemen from 2 other California community colleges. Clayton, 6-1 and 260 pounds, played at Antelope Valley College, while the 6-2, 285 Vasquez played at East Los Angeles Community College.

Slover, a 6-2, 265-pound defensive lineman, helped lead Fullerton Community College to the National Southern Conference championship in the Southern California Football Association. He had 19 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, two quarterback hurries and recovered a fumble.

The final transfer is Boness, a 2008 Alliance High School graduate. The 6-6, 200-pound wide receiver, played basketball for a season at Briar Cliff College in Iowa before coming to CSC. As a senior at Alliance, he had three interceptions and was named all-conference.

He had a phenomenal prep basketball career. As a senior, he led Nebraska’s Class B players by scoring 20.8 points a game and connecting on 48 percent of his field goals.

He was a two-time all-state selection and was the Star-Herald All-Region Boy’s Basketball Player of the Year. He finished his basketball career with 1,035 points and 481 rebounds.

The Eagles will begin spring practice March 15. The annual spring game is scheduled for Saturday, April 17, beginning at 10 a.m.
