Today was the first day high school seniors could sign football National Letters of Intent, and Chadron State had 12 first day signees by noon and 25 by the end of the day.
With no head coach yet, Eagles offensive coordinator Chris Stein took charge of the recruiting efforts.
He says the remaining staff is very excited about the recruits....calling them "great athletes along with being exceptional students and citizens" who are happy to be par of "an important time in the history of Chadron State football.”
Athletic director Brad Smith, who's headed up the football program since early October, couldn't be more impressed or pleased with the day-one group and the efforts of Stein and the other coaches to get them signed.
Nine of the Day-One signings are defensive backs, six are linebackers and five are defensive linemen. The offensive signees are four wide receivers and one lineman.
Seven players are from Nebraska: Trey Allison of Gordon-Rushville, Buomkuouth Lual - Grand Island High, Sawyer Burke - Brady, Frantzlee LeCrete - Garden County, Eric Vejvoda - Ralston, Parker Young - Hershey, and Wade Reeves - Chadron, whose older brother Travis has started for CSC at the same position the past 2 years.
Six are from Colorado with five each from California and Louisiana. The Rocky Mountain recruits are Marcus Brown of Colorado Springs, Austin Gutierrez of Longmont, Dalton Hall and Jordan King of Fredrick, Timmy Ornelas of Fort Lupton and Sergi Ruiz of Firestone.
The California natives joining CSC are 3 from Stockton - Maurice Boyd, Brian Wood and Ryan Wood - along with Isaac Griffen of San Diego, and Marcus Phillips of La Mesa
The Louisiana recruits include Tre Brown, Courtland Joshua and Cortez Mitchell all of Donaldsonville, D’Vonnte Matthews of Jeanerette and Treston Decoud of Mandeville.
Also joining the Eagles are Taylenn Arnett of Lusk, Wyo., and Jamel Gilliam from Fayetteville, Ga.
The Eagles return 60 letter winners and 17 starters from last year's team which, despite a rash of injuries across the roster, finished with a 6-5 record and tied for 3rd in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference with a 6-3 mark.
Since 2000, Chadron State has won or shared the RMAC title five times. No other school in the conference has more than three championships during that stretch.
