Chadron State's search for a new head football coach is nearing the end. Athletic director Brad Smith...co-chair of the school's 7-member search committee...hopes to release the names of the finalists today.
The school has not said how many applications it received, but Smith said about a week before the January 27th application deadline there were about 30...fewer than 5 with head coaching experience.
Smith has said all along the goal was to hire the new coach as quickly as possible without rushing. He's hoping to be able to announce the choice early next week.
Chadron State essentially suspended head coach Bill O'Boyle in early October after self-reporting to the NCAA possible violations in football fundraising, then announced just before Christmas that his contract would not be renewed.
