Chadron State kicker Travis Atter has been named to The Associated Press Little All-American team, one of just 3 players to earn recognition from the team up of players from Division II and III, along with NAIA.
Atter, who holds nearly every single season and career kicking record at Chadron State, was named to the third-team, as was Colorado School of Mines receiver Adam Sauer.
The third RMAC athlete earning Little All-American honors was Nebraska-Kearney offensive lineman Jack Hiett. Hiett, the older brother of CSC guard Tim Hiett, was named to the second-team. All 3 RMAC selections are seniors.
A second Nebraska school also placed a player on the Little All-American list. Wayne State junior receiver Frederick Bruno was named as the all-purpose player
Headlining the first-team is Wayne State University (MI) tailback Joique Bell, the Harlon Hill Trophy winner as Division II’s top player and the all-division rushing leader in the NCAA at just under 190 yards a game. Bell also averaged nearly 3 touchdowns a game.
The first-team quarterback is Zach Amedro of West Libery, who threw 49 touchdown passes...the most in college football this season...and passed for 4,945 yards for the top scoring team in Division II. West Liberty had 3 first-team selections, the most of any school.
Completing the Little All-America backfield is a player Chadron State fans got to know in the final game of the 2008 season...Isaac Odum of Minnesota-Duluth, a junior who ran for 1,808 yards and scored 33 touchdowns this seasons.
Division III's Cecil Shorts of Mount Union made the first team at receiver, just a few days after he filled in at quarterback in the Purple Raiders’ 24-7 semifinal victory against Wesley.Shorts caught a touchdown pass, then ran for two scores while playing quarterback for injured starter Kurt Rocco.
Mount Union...which has won 10 national titles since 1993...will play Wisconsin-Whitewater on Saturday in Salem, Va., for another.
Also making the first-team was Augustana (Ill.) College’s Blaine Westemeyer of Augustana (Ill) the first offensive lineman to win the Gagliardi Trophy as Division III’s top player.
