The Box Butte County Commissioners have set a deadline of December 31 to complete the closing of the county's tourism office at Third and Sweetwater. The office has been located in the former KPNY Radio building for the past three years.
On November 29, the commissioners voted unanimously to rescind the county's four percent lodging tax, effective April 1. The usage tax is collected by local motel operators, with the revenue earmarked for tourism promotion and tourist attraction upgrades.
Furnishings from the tourism office will be distributed to other county offices as needed or placed in storage.
The contract for county tourism director Liz Taylor-Herdt will be acted on at the commissioners' December 20 meeting. Herdt's contract is scheduled to expire in June, 2011.
