BULLETIN BOARD With the "Thunder On The Prairie" Car Show coming to Alliance this weekend, the MEN of KCOW Radio have taken time to share their memories of the first vehicles we owned.
First car was a 1939 Chevy Four Door Sedan. It had a three speed on the column shift with a pedal clutch, which included a vacuum shift. Color: Grey Price: Purchased from his uncle in 1958 for $100. Price Of Gas To Fill The Tank: 19 to 22 cents a gallon. Memory: "I know I drove that car around Rock County (NE) roads before I had by drivers license, because I was younger than 16 when I bought the car. My Dad thought I was nuts for buying it." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1966 Chevy BelAir. 4 Door, 283 Engine. Automatic. AM radio only. NO eight track or cassette player. Purchased in 1974 from the Glaser Family in Spalding, NE. for $300. Price of Gas to Fill the Tank: "I think around 50 to 55 cents a gallon." Memory: "A lot of cruising up and down Main Street in Spalding, NE. and around the dirt and gravel roads of Greeley and Wheeler Counties. We had to drive eight miles to get to school, so it saw a lot of country roads." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First Car: 1964 Ford Galaxy 500. Color: Copper Bronz with a white vinyl roof and silver interior. Engine: V-8, 289, automatic. Purchased near brand new from the Hicks Motor Company in Pipestone, MN. for $3,600. It already had 5,000 miles on it because it had been used as a drivers education car. Purchased when I was 16 and a senior in high school and kept it until 1969. Price of Gas to Fill the Tank: 24 cents a gallon. Memory: "Drove it from St. Louis, Missouri to Mankato, Minnesota once with three other guys in the car. On the Interstate, it could reach speeds of up to 105 mph." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1972 Ford F-150 (half-ton) Pickup Truck. Purchased in 1975 from one of Dad's co-workers in Lincoln, NE for $1,750 cash. Had saved the money from my summer job on the farm. It was a four speed stick shift. Color: Light Blue AM Only Radio. (Only would allow passengers to listen to KFAB or WOW Radio of Omaha. NO ROCK STATIONS!!!) ***Eight-track players were only installed by rich kids.*** Price of Gas to Fill the Tank: 50 cents a gallon from Dad's bulk tanks. 55 cents at the pump in town. Memory: "After I bought it, Dad made a pair of wooden stock racks to put on the sides so I could haul pigs and sheep to the fairs and sale barns. Then he bought me a pair of huge rear-view mirrors for each side of the truck. I was in hog-heaven!" --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1968 Mustang Coupe, 289, automatic, off-white Paid $1,500 in 1983 from a co-worker at the Chadron Safeway Store. I kept it about two years and sold it so I could buy a 1979 Mustang Pace Car. Gas in 1983 was about $1.10 a gallon. Most Memorable Event: Coming home to Chadron from a Styx Concert in Rapid City in rain and came over the top of a hill and 20 deer were in the road. I manage to dodge every deer and didn't put a scratch on the car. My girlfriend was more worried about the deer than she was us or the car. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOUG ABBOTT (Deceased)-----Announcer 1956 GMC Pickup Truck with a G-T-O Engine. Also had a wrap around back windshield. Purchased in 1974 for $500 from Dick Bacon of Alliance. Transmission: Four speed stick shift Color: Dark Red AM Only Radio (Listened to KOMA of Oklahoma City) Price of Gas to Fill the Tank: 50 cents a gallon, but I think the truck only got 8 miles to the gallon. Memory: "Racing on Flack Avenue. I managed to bury the speedometer between Third and Flack and Pizza Hut. The speedometer only went to 80 mph. I guess I was going faster than that." Not So Favorite Memory: "I wrecked it." ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
