Nile Kempton Greathouse, 91, of Harrisburg, entered into rest on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 at Regional West Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Funeral services were held Friday, October 5, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 501 Winter Creek Drive, Scottsbluff, with Bishop Jared Palmer officiating. Burial was in West Lawn Cemetery in Gering with military honors provided by the Nebraska National Guard.

Nile was born in West Salem, Illinois, on August 13, 1916 to Oren F. and Dora Kate Kempton Greathouse. He attended school in West Salem, Harrisburg grade school, and graduated from Harrisburg High School in 1934. Nile enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, as Tech. Sergent on April 6, 1943 and was assigned with the 8th Air Force 381st bomb group as a top turret gunner and aerial engineer on a B-17 bomber. He was stationed in England; he flew 35 missions over Germany. Nile received the Distinguished Flying Cross, Oak Leaf Cluster Air Medal, and European Theater of Operation Ribbon with Four Bronze Service Stars. He was honorably discharge October 21, 1945. He married Roma Gene Johnson, August 11, 1946; they made their home on the Diamond E. Ranch in Banner County.

Nile enjoyed farming/ranching and his animals, especially Herford and Terintaise cattle. He was active with his children in 4-H. He belonged to the American Legion and the U.S. Air Force Association. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where we he was involved with the Boy Scouts, Young Men, and Sunday School. In his later years, he enjoyed watching all kinds of sports, keeping up on current events, gardening, and spending time with his family.

Nile is survived by his wife, Roma, Harrisburg and four children, Vicki and Hazen Stone, Harrisburg; Sandra and Kenton Cardiff, Gering; Dana and Cynthia Greathouse, Littleton, CO; Tonya Greathouse, Glenrock, WY; one adopted daughter, Jayanti Rana, Katamandu, Nepal and grandson Binayak and Hera Rana, New York City, NY; eight grandchildren, Nalicia and Mason Carlson, Gering; Kjrsten and Ariane Cardiff, Gering; Joshua Greathouse, Littleton, CO; and Timothy, Shaun, and Lindsey Klutts, Glenrock, WY, and Alysa Klutts, Scottsbluff. Five step grandchildren, Amy and Bracken Wells, New York City, NY; Brandon and Amber Gueck, Salt Lake City, UT; Terri and Tony Roug, Glen Ell’yn, Ill; Bridgette and Les Bjerke, Bagley, MN; Shanelle Williams, Scottsbluff, NE. One great granddaughter, Ella Gene Carlson, Gering; nine step great grandchildren; and one step great great granddaughter, Nevaeh Close, Bagley, MN Memorial Chapel.

Memorials may be made to the Banner County Museum, Harrisburg.
