Chancellor Harvey Perlman made the announcement in a news release. Osborne takes over for Steve Pederson, who was fired as athletic director on Monday. The 70-year-old Osborne returns 10 years after finishing a celebrated coaching career that culminated with three national championships in his last four seasons. During a news conference Tuesday afternoon, Perlman stated the job is open-ended, which means there is no timeline for how long Osborne will hold the job. It could be months, or it could be years. Osborne says there will be no changes in the coaching staff until the season concludes, and then the program will be evaluated. Since leaving coaching, Osborne has served three terms in Congress, made an unsuccessful gubernatorial run, taught in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's business school and worked as a consultant for local college athletic departments.
