Woodhead, who has now rushed for 7,441 yards in his career, has gained 1,393 all-purpose yards in six games this season, 459 more yards than the entire Fort Lewis offense has accumulated through five games. The Skyhawks’ offensive woes don’t end there. They’ve only scored three touchdowns – one was a fumble returned by the defense – and just 29 points in 20 quarters of play. For all of the struggles, though, the Skyhawks have a resilient quarterback in junior Tom Stofel, who began starting in the third week of the season. He’s completed 36 of 86 passes for 329 yards, no touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s also the team’s second leading rusher with 158 yards on the ground, and he’s scored both of Fort Lewis’ offensive TDs. Joel Johnson leads the Skyhawks’ ground attack with 286 yards on 86 carries. Vic Amick is the leading receiver with 14 receptions for 73 yards. Brandon Cummings, Fort Lewis’ only representative on the RMAC preseason first team, has 12 receptions for 97 yards. Last week, Fort Lewis’ offense struggled once again in its 14-7 loss to rival Adams State. For the game, the Skyhawks gained 161 yards. Fort Lewis’ only win of the season came against winless Western State on Sept. 29 in a 19-0 victory. In the Skyhawks’ four losses, they’ve been outscored 141-10. Despite the Skyhawks’ struggles, Chadron State defensive coordinator Todd Auer believes the Skyhawks have skilled players. “Fort Lewis can run the ball well and they have a physical back who gets a lot of his yards after contact,” Auer said. “Their quarterback is athletic and he makes a lot of plays with his feet. The receivers are good and probably some of the fastest we’ve seen, and their offensive line is playing well. They’ve got guys who can do some really nice things, but it seems like they’re just in kind of in a funk. But we know they’ll be ready and they’re well coached. They’re definitely a team we can’t overlook.” So far this season, the Eagles’ defense hasn’t overlooked anyone. They’ve shut out three of their last four opponents and allowed just two touchdowns in the last 18 quarters. For the season, the Eagles are allowing their opponents 7.5 points and 256.2 yards of total offense a game. Senior safety Paul Schweger leads the talented unit with 34 tackles, but seven others have at least 16. Schweger has also picked off three passes and broken up four more. Defensively for Fort Lewis, Mark Meng leads the team with 50 total tackles. Including Meng, five players have at least 30 tackles, but the defense is allowing 373.0 yards a game and 28.2 points to its opponents. Through six games the CSC offense hasn’t had much trouble putting up points. The Eagles average 37.5 points a game and have scored 31 touchdowns while averaging 418.5 yards a game. CSC’s offense jumps on its opponents early. The Eagles are outscoring their foes 72-17 in the first quarter and 113-24 in the first half. Woodhead, who’s rushed for 1,076 yards, caught 17 passes for 317 yards and scored 15 touchdowns, leads the offense. However, the NCAA’s all-time leading rusher isn’t a one man show. Junior quarterback Joe McLain, who has completed 78 of 127 passes (61.4 percent) for 1,039 yards and six touchdowns, is now 21-2 as a starter. He’s also dangerous on the ground, rushing for 106 yards and scoring four TDs. McLain also does a good job of spreading the ball around. Eight receivers have at least five receptions and Isaac Stockton leads the team with two touchdown grabs. Saturday’s meeting is the 22nd meeting between the schools. CSC owns an 18-3 advantage, including last year’s 40-27 win in Durango, Colo.
