Chadron native and former Black Hills State football All-American Zac Alcorn has been signed by the San Francisco 49ers for their practice squad. The 6-4, 255-pound TE had been one of the last preseason cuts by the Green Bay Packers.
Alcorn had signed with the Packers as an undrafted free agent in 2006, then spent the first half of last season on the practice squad before being activated and playing in six of the team's last seven games on special teams.
The 49ers released tight end Zac Herold to make room for Alcorn on the 8-man practice squad roster. Black Hills State coach John Scott says the Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs had also expressed interest in Alcorn.
The 27-year old spent his first three college seasons with Chadron State, sat out two years, then transferred to Black Hills. Alcorn was a 2-year starter with the Yellow Jackets, earning NAIA All-American honors as a senior in 2005 when he caught 43 passes for 689 yards and seven touchdowns.
