KEARNEY – Chadron State’s Danny Woodhead wasn’t able to find the end zone during the Eagles’ 28-16 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday night, but quarterback Joe McLain more than made up for him.
McLain, who moved to 23-2 under center at CSC, inspired the Eagles to a gritty win over the rival Lopers after CSC lost Woodhead to a sprained arch on his foot after the first play of the game. McLain threw for 257 yards and one touchdown – a 22-yard completion to Logan Stropko near the end of the first half – and he rushed for three scores in the second half as the Eagles erased a 9-7 halftime deficit en route to their 21st consecutive regular season win.
“It feels good to get the win, but the credit goes to the receivers,” McLain said. “They made me look good out there because they caught some poorly thrown balls, but that’s how we win. We’re a team.”
The Eagles’ offense struggled for much of the first half without Woodhead. For the first time all season, Chadron State had zero yards rushing at the half, but the Eagles were able to stay in the game thanks to 106 yards through the air and Stropko’s touchdown catch with 40 seconds to play.
The second half was a different story, though, as CSC scored three touchdowns on its first four possessions and the defense continued to stymie the Kearney offensive attack.
For the game, the Eagles’ defense limited UNK to 40 rushing yards on 30 attempts and just 296 total yards.
“Our defense played great,” McLain said. “If it wasn’t for those guys the first half could’ve been a lot uglier.”
Junior linebacker Austin Bailey led the Eagles with nine tackles, including three sacks totaling 28 yards. Senior safety Craig Kaiser finished with six and five others had four.
Senior cornerback Beau Wendling might’ve made one of the biggest defensive plays in the game when he intercepted Havrilla’s pass in the end zone to thwart the Lopers’ scoring threat when the Eagles owned a 14-9 lead.
Stropko made plenty of big catches for the Eagles. The senior from Thermopolis, Wyo., finished with a game-high eight receptions for 117 yards. However, Stropko suffered a torn ACL late in the fourth quarter and it’s unlikely he’ll return this year.
In addition to McLain’s 68 yards rushing, the CSC backfield was bolstered by Aaron Cooksley and Mark Haag. Cooksley gained 47 yards and Haag added 18 more. Haag also caught two passes for 41 yards.
The Eagles, 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, will host undefeated Mesa State next Saturday for Family Day.
