A number of students from the Alliance Public Schools are missing a substantial amount of classes and administrators are concerned.
During Monday night’s Alliance School Board meeting, High School Principal Dick Zarkowski and Curriculum Director Rita Moravek outlined the impact excessive absences may have on a student.
Moravek told KCOW radio that the absenteeism is spread throughout the district at all grade levels. She says the grade school kids who miss five days of school will miss out on 12.5 hours of reading instruction. Missing ten days of school equates to missing 20.5 hours of reading instruction.
Moravek says with the older kids, extended absences may affect credits.
Nebraska state law requires elementary students to be in school 1,032 hours while secondary students should complete 1,080 hours of instruction.
Moravek says the district will be mailing a letter to parents reminding them of the importance of having their child in school every day possible.
